Tony Ayres throws in the UK
Published Date:
09 June 2010
PROFESSIONAL
darts ace Tony Ayres admits he is still recovering after beating world
number three James Wade on his way to the UK Open semi finals at the
weekend.
Ayres, from Billingshurst, enjoyed a remarkable run to the last four at
Bolton's Reebok Stadium, where he evetually lost out to beaten finalist
Gary Anderson.
"I'm feeling very good, but it's all still sinking in at the moment," he remarked.
Ayres
pulled off a couple of stunning come-back wins before his clash with
Wade in the quarter-finals, including a 9-7 victory against Mark Walsh
in the fourth round.
Having lost the first five legs without reply, the Billingshurst-based player held little hope of pulling through.
"I'd given up at 5-0, and just wanted to focus on enjoying the match," he said.
However, Ayres managed to draw level with Walsh before winning four of the next six legs to reach the last 16.
"Knowing that I'd come back from so far behind gave me the boost I needed to win the match," said Ayres.
He
followed this with a slow-starting fifth round victory over Alan 'The
Saint ' Tabern, winning 9-5 and securing a place in the quarters
against former title holder Wade.
He commented: "I'm pleased
with my performance and feeling confident, and I'm looking forward to
PDC World Championship in December."
